HOW TO USE A KNIFE AND LOOK SOFT LIKE HELL
That is a phrase that any lover of the blade that boasts, or
"blady" could use on any given day. Whether it is to present a new
treasure found with pride, or clean the dirt and grime of a faithful companion
very used.
"But what is the secret to using my knife?"
For a knife enthusiast (like me), a well-made, high-quality
blade is the ultimate accessory. It is a statement of robust individuality in a
society that is increasingly sensitive to any tool that can be perceived as a
"threat".
So, to understand how to carry and use a Handmade
Damascus Steel Brass Bolster with respect and look without problems
at the same time, we need to discover the following:
What is your purpose to carry a knife?
This might seem like a silly question, since a knife is a
tool that can be used for a wide variety of applications, but think about your
particular lifestyle and the things you do every day. Some people are cowboys,
Bushmen, military or firefighters. And others are businessmen, managers and
clerks. Whatever you do during the day, I'm pretty sure you'll find at least
one instance where you'd like to have a knife, even to open emails or packages.
The kind of work you expect your sword to do dictates what kind of sheet you
should wear.
How comfortable are you with the use of a knife?
Everyone has a different level of comfort and experience
when it comes to sharp blades, and that's something to keep in mind when
choosing your daily companion. I grew up surrounded by knives of all kinds, and
I have always resorted more to fixed blades than to folders. Do not get me
wrong, a small and light folder I like over and over again, but my constant companions
with which I feel more secure are the fixed sheets, for several reasons.
A fixed blade never stops opening and does not close with
your hand. I cannot tell you how many times I have carried high-quality
well-known folders in my pocket or purse and have failed to close due to lint
or dirt.
The strength of a piece of hardened steel without moving
parts means a stronger and stronger knife. Again, maybe I'm harder on my knives
than some, but after a while, the folding mechanism loosens and becomes sloppy.
It is not a problem with fixed blades.
The deployment of a fixed blade is much faster. There are
knife-fighting instructors who will tell you that a fixed blade is much quicker
to use for self-defense, simply because there are fewer steps to have a sharp
weapon ready to defend yourself and others. This is also where reason # 2 comes
back into play. :-)
What is acceptable for your life and social interactions?
Many of us have daily jobs with coworkers and bosses,
everyone with whom we must be respectful. This does not mean we give up our
right to carry a knife (always check your local knives laws) but we can choose
to wear it in a way that stays true to our needs and beliefs while respecting
others. Now, I know guys who wear a 24 "katana to the handlebars of their
Harley during their weekend walk, or hunters who carry 5 different knives and 2
axes to the bush in search of the perfect Elk. Great! Do that! When it comes to
the pride of caring completely and using your treasured blades, I say let your
crazy flag fly.
Honestly, the secret to using your knife (or knives) and
looking like a sturdy, capable and smooth guy like hell is to choose the blades
that fit your lifestyle and with which you feel safe. The more comfortable you
feel with carrying and using your knife, the more it translates to others. And
you never know, maybe you'll inspire someone else to become a good tough guy.
